Insecurity.

It’s a tough feeling.

Always wondering what other’s think…

In a constant state of worry…

It can be daunting…

Especially when you’re improving your style

If you’re one of them…you might be scared of comments like:

  • Shallow
  • Pretentious
  • Trying too hard

Sadly…

That’s why men are reluctant to dress better.

But hear me out: do NOT listen to those negative voices in your head.

As long as you’re confident…

People will notice…and give you props for your style.

dress confidence style tip know purposeStyle Tip #1 – Remember Your Purpose

It all starts with the “why” of dressing well…

Is it about status? More respect from your colleagues? A step forward in your career?

Whatever your reason – embrace it. Take it from a guy named Neil Patel who did the same thing. Being in B2B sales, he had kept track of all his business meetings for the past 4-5 years. His closing rate was at a modest 25%.

He realized that a professional image could change things up. So he spent $160,000 on clothing (yes $160K) to do this. And guess what? He achieved a 15% increase in sales closed – and $700K in total!

Sure – this is an extreme example. You don’t have to drop $160K on quality clothing, but paying attention to your image has long-term benefits. It’s not about the clothing but your message to the world.

Remembering your purpose will help you overcome self-doubts. It’ll keep you motivated to dress sharp…despite criticism.

Style Tip #2 – Know The Foundations Of Men’s Style

I hear these questions often:

  • “Antonio, how do I choose between X and Y?”
  • “I keep buying new clothes…but I feel like I never have anything to wear…why can’t I find the right stuff?”

Here’s the thing…Mastering style is a long and winding road. It all starts with the style pyramid – made of up fit, fabric, and function. Use this as your map to staying on track.

For example – let’s say you’re shopping for the perfect men’s dress shirt. You may be able to find a great-fitting cheap shirt off the rack, but does it fit perfectly around the arms and neck? How many dry cleaning runs can it endure? Those are some factors to double-check.

Take care of the basics…and that’s when you can move on to the next stage. You can think about dress shirt color and pattern (since those things influence how formal the shirt is). And color in men’s clothing is tied to a bit of social psychology. It can literally affect the moods of people you interact with.

Some guys have the clothing items figured out. But they don’t look at concrete examples for the specifics.

One guy might want to wear a suit and tie…but can’t decide on colors. Another might be heading to a beach party…but can’t pinpoint the best shirt for it.

Don’t worry. There are many different celebrities, social media stars, and public figures who can be your style inspiration.

It’s best to pick someone who’s been seen wearing the same kind of stuff for years (instead of those who just follow trend after trend).

You can use this list of 59 stylish men to get a visual reference. It can be Prime Minister Trudeau in his fitted suits. Or maybe Will Smith in his unique sports jackets. Or even the guys from Street Etiquette wearing urban clothing.

And don’t forget about film and TV characters from past eras. You can try vintage outfits in Mad Men if you’re keen on something classic. There’s also the James Bond summer style if you need ideas on how to dress for warm weather.

When men start experimenting with a new style…a common occurrence is that they start feeling uncomfortable.

Once outside their comfort zone they feel like they’re in a costume…like the clothes are wearing them.

It’s important to remember the difference between uncomfortable vs unfamiliar. Chances are – it’s not actually uncomfortable (as in painful!) but unfamiliar…and you can become familiar with something with practice!

You can start wearing that brown tweed sports jacket at home before wearing it in public. You can practice wearing it while eating, brushing your teeth, or during other normal routines. And practice grows your confidence.

Sometimes, an outfit you’re used to wearing can make you feel powerful. You’ll start to believe you can get that promotion…or impress the next woman you talk to at the bar. But other times you’ll need to be flexible. You’ll need to adapt to places where it’s better to dress differently (particularly more casual settings). That’s when you should learn how to look sharp without overdressing.

And always be aware of how to dress appropriately for your age. It’s also a plus if you have various accessories – pocket squares, unique necktie knots, men’s dress shoes, the right sunglasses for your face shape, etc. – as simple details can transform your appearance every time.

dress confidence style tip teach others stylishStyle Tip #5 – Teach Other Men How To Be Stylish

So when you’ve learned and applied these style tips…should you stop there? I don’t think so.

The next stage for you is mentorship. To coach other guys on how to dress better. And explain the complexities of men’s style in simple terms.

Think about it: what good is knowledge if you don’t pass it on? Isn’t great to share the things that have improved your life?

These lessons can make a huge impact in their lives (both now and later on). So let’s pay it forward. Let’s help out other men in the same way fathers guide their sons.

When you see first-hand how they’ve benefitted from this knowledge…you’ll feel even better about yourself. It’ll confirm the value of dressing sharp. And the best part? You’ll become far more proficient with style through coaching, which only boosts your confidence.
