Buy Two? | Essentials Men Should Own In Multiples

stylish-men-buy-twiceAre you constantly behind schedule?

Bad breath at work?

Smelling cheese when you take your shoes off?

Clothes a bit tired and worn out?

Break these habits NOW by owning at least two of these must-have, heavily used items. A resourceful, self-reliant man is prepared – not one mishap away from an emergency. That includes style emergencies.

If you’re thinking, ‘I can’t afford two of everything!’ – two cost the same as one. When you have two, you use them half as much, so they last twice as long. So many men limit themselves unnecessarily because they don’t realise this.

casual-mens-shoes# 1. Workhorse Shoes

It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about wholecuts or chucks. If you have a pair you wear every day – you NEED to buy two pairs. Daily shoes don’t have time to air out – they’ll get stinky FAST. They also wear out very quickly, so you’ll need to get them re-soled… and what will you wear while they’re at the cobbler?

Buy two pairs and rotate them to keep them fresh and to extend the wearable life of the shoes.

#2. Jeans That Fit Your Body Type

Nailing the fit off the rack is tough with anything. Jeans especially so – different types of jeans fit can dramatically alter the look of your whole body, and they aren’t something most people think of getting tailored. So if you find a pair of jeans that fit great, you will probably wear them all the time.

This runs the risk of having your favorite pair wear out in a few months – and of wearing dirty jeans that fit great instead of a clean pair you hate. Just like shoes, buy two or three pairs if the fit is on point, and rotate through to extend their life and save your pride.

#3. Suit Trousers

I’ve talked about this before.  When you buy a new suit, spend the extra 100 or so bucks on a spare pair of trousers with it! This means you can rotate trousers to extend the life of the suit (the trouser does the heavy lifting, the jacket just hangs out and looks good… a union job?)

Spending $100 on spare trousers beats spending $1000 on a new suit when you could have gotten years more out of it.

Really, Antonio… you want me to own two WATCHES?

I admit this one is a little bit less obvious, but think about what your watch does for you:

A. It tells you the time…okay, so does your phone, BUT

  • watch batteries don’t die after a few hours
  • watches are classy…phones are not
  • watches don’t offend people (seriously…pull your iPhone out next time you’re in a job interview and see what happens)

B. It sends a message about your personality and status.

There’s a good reason politicians and other powerful men give watches as gifts… it tells people you’re punctual, organized and pay attention to detail.

Interestingly, when I was reading the testimonials for Original Grain watches, it looks like a lot of women are giving these as gifts to their husbands and boyfriends. Many of them were on watch #2 or 3… maybe it’s a hint that you should class up a bit, guys?

They tell people you’re willing and able to drop a little money to polish the edges of your appearance. It makes sense to have a few affordable, good-looking watches on hand so you can really dial it in then, doesn’t it?

#4. Go-To Dress Shirts

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’ll know all about the importance of the basic white and light blue dress shirts. Why not buy multiples of each when you find a brand that works well?

If you get enough of these shirts on rotation, you can stop stressing about a clean or well-pressed shirt for work. Just take them to be dry cleaned in batches and let the dry cleaner worry about that.

brown-sports-jacket#5. Your Favorite Sports Jackets

Most of us are probably wearing sports jackets much more often than our suits.  The common theme of this list comes up again: more wear = shorter life.

Buying jackets is tougher than buying shirts in many ways. They’re more expensive, they’re harder to tailor, and unlike a shirt, they are on display all the time – which makes fit that much more important.

Protect your first impression – if you find a perfect sports jacket, keep your eyes open for a deal and buy a second. Rotate just like your suit trousers, and you won’t have to scramble for a replacement when the jacket starts to get long in the tooth.

#6. Own Multiple Toothbrushes

Like with razors, it never hurts to have a spare or two in the rotation. I for one have definitely fumbled a toothbrush straight into the toilet on a groggy morning.

Emergencies aside, toothbrushes are small – keep one in your briefcase or desk in the event you have an unexpected meeting. Fresh breath goes a long way, and we can all afford an extra $5.

#7. Best Smelling Men’s Fragrances

If you’re into high end men’s fragrances, we certainly can’t all afford an extra one of THOSE to keep at the office. So think smart… instead of buying two, spend a little money on high-quality glass vials and learn to decant your favorite cologne.

Decanting is just a fancy word for pouring liquid from one container to another gently.  If you’re decanting from a splash bottle of cologne, it’s pretty easy – pour from one to the other (a funnel may come in handy!)  Try to get it done quickly and cap the bottles off so as to minimize evaporation.

Decanting from a spray bottle is a bit trickier – a funnel is almost certainly needed.  Just spray evenly from the original bottle into the vial (or whatever container you’re decanting to) and try to keep the pressure slow and even, again to minimize evaporation or loss through splashing.

Gloves are just a good idea all around here.

By breaking it up into several smaller bottles, you can travel with, stash or even share your favorite fragrances. It’s not a bad way to try a few high-quality ones on the cheap. Go in with a buddy, and split the costs.

necktie-pocket-square#8. Classic Pocket Squares

This is another one with a caveat.  You probably don’t want to buy multiples of that mauve paisley patterned pocket square – but what about the classic white linen pocket square?

We all own it and love it – it’s hard to beat the simple elegance of the white pocket square. Unfortunately, like any other white fabric, they stain easily, and it’s hard to recover stained white linen.

Keep a few in rotation – that way, you can cut your losses when one gets stained, and you won’t ever find yourself without.

#9. Classic Neckties

Just as with pocket squares, you want to stick to buying multiples in classics.  It’s a good idea to have a couple each on hand of solids, polka dots or maybe foulards.  They are easy to work into multiple outfits, and will probably get more wear than your paisleys and club ties

They are easy to work into multiple outfits, and will probably get more wear than your paisleys and club ties, which means…you guessed it…a shorter lifespan. Buy multiples when you see them on sale.

#10. Undergarments

I’m talking underwear, socks, and undershirts. I sincerely hope you already own more than two of these! Now – how about owning enough for two WEEKS?

Stop making work stressful – we’re bound to miss laundry day once in awhile, so have enough to get you through without worrying that you smell bad. If you’re spraying deodorant on your boxer briefs in the morning, you might be dressed impeccably, and you might get lucky and make it through the day without anyone noticing, but YOU will know. Research shows that knowing you have body odor affects your self-esteem and how others perceive you – even on video.

This is one place where a subscription service can really shine!
