5 Rolexes I LOVE – And The ONE I Bought | Which Rolex To Buy?

Gentlemen… I did it.

I bought my first Rolex. And I LOVE it.

I’ve read that the right watch ‘sings’ to you.

When I tried this one on, it did. It sang.

Want to know which one I chose?

I’ll tell you. But first, I want to tell you about the 5 other Rolexes I considered.

This was a REALLY tough decision between six awesome timepieces. I came within an inch of buying #1.

I’ll tell you what I liked about each one, and which ones I’m planning to buy in the future. This might be my first Rolex, but it definitely won’t be my last.

Let’s start at the bottom with #5 on my list. This is an incredible watch. You’ve got to wonder… what 5 watches did I like more than THIS?

#5. Blue Rolex Submariner

From the outset, I felt like I had to look at an iconic dive watch. I tried on a number of them and my favorite was this one with the blue face in yellow Rolesor. That’s Rolex language for a two-tone watch in which the bezel, crown, and center links are gold and the case and outer links are steel.

I thought I was set on my first Rolex having a blue face. Whenever I saw it I tried it on and it looked really good. I didn’t expect to like the two-tone as much as I did.

I also looked at the straight steel ones and they were beautiful as well. A steel Submariner with a black face is the iconic watch that James Bond and Steve McQueen both wore.

This was definitely high on my list and I thought it was a great-looking watch. I just didn’t feel like it was going to be my everyday wear. I wanted something a bit more unique. So I looked at this…

#4. Rolex Explorer 39

I was definitely drawn to the Explorer. Not the Explorer II: that one has a much larger face at 42mm. I wanted the more classic design with a 39mm face.

It was smaller than the Submariner and I was fascinated by its history. Sir Edmund Hillary wore one when he climbed Mt. Everest. The dial and the overall look were simple and elegant. This was high on my list too… but it didn’t ‘sing’ to me. What could beat these two watches?

#3. Rolex Oyster Perpetual

This was the first dress watch I looked at and I didn’t expect to like it. I figured it would just be a predictable entry-level watch, and I wanted something unique. When I looked at it, however, I was pleasantly surprised at its elegant simplicity. And I LOVED that blue face. This was the most affordable of all the Rolexes I looked at (and I was buying new).

I found the green markings around the dial a bit off-putting, so I looked at some other colors. The gray dial had blue marks that looked more attractive, but I really wanted a watch with a blue face. I thought I would get bored with the Oyster Perpetual.

I’m probably going to pick one of these up in the next few years, but for my first Rolex it was too simple. I wanted a something lot more intricate and eye-catching, something that shouted ‘Wow. Now THAT is a timepiece’ to anyone looking at it.

#2. White Gold Cosmograph Daytona

This beautiful chronograph racing watch was designed for professional racing drivers. That’s a tachymetric scale on the bezel, which lets you measure speeds of up to 400 mph with a second hand that’s accurate to 1/8 of a second.

I even looked at some older Daytonas. The thing that threw me was the price. I knew they would be expensive, but they were way over my budget. This one, in 18ct white gold, retailed at $31,790.

These are beautiful watches and I hope to get my hands on one in the next five years or so. But because of how busy they were, I didn’t see them as an everyday watch.

This next watch is the one I came really close to buying. I want to get one of these in the next 6-8 months.

#1. Rolex Datejust 41

This is the Rolex I almost purchased: the Datejust in steel. I love this watch’s beautiful blue face and sheer simplicity. You’ll notice the bracelet is different: it has the dressier Jubilee bracelet, with five rounded links, instead of the flat three-link Oyster bracelet. I didn’t expect to like the Jubilee as much as I did.

I tried on the Datejust in  both steel and white gold. I actually preferred the plain steel because it had a smooth bezel instead of the fluted bezel you see here. But I couldn’t decide between the Oyster and the Jubilee bracelet.

So while I was thinking about it I tried on a few other watches. There was another one that I did not expect to like as much as I did. But when I tried it on, I knew it was the one.

The Datejust is a great classic. It was owned by Martin Luther King. And I’m still going to purchase it, likely in the next year or so, with a blue face.

So which one ended up beating it out?

The Yachtmaster.

What can I say? It sang to me.  Now which color do you think I picked?

Would you guess that I went with a blue face? That’s what I was leaning towards the whole time…

Rolex Yachtmaster 40

Here’s the big reveal. I bought a Yachtmaster 40 in Everose gold and steel, with a chocolate face. Everose gold is Rolex’s own invention. Most rose gold alloys lose their color over time. This one doesn’t.

It’s just a beautiful watch. When I saw it in the case I thought it was nice. When I put it ON I thought ‘Wow. THIS is my watch.’

I made the decision right there. I talked to a friend who had a friend in the industry and got a great deal.

I just love this watch. It’s distinctive, but I can wear it as an everyday watch with anything from a suit to jeans and a t-shirt.

I’ve owned quite a few nice things. But this watch represents for me the success we here at RMRS had in 2017. No one can ever take that away from me. And to have something I can wear every day that reminds me of what I’ve accomplished and how far I’ve come over a decade – that’s special to me.
