I’ve been arrested and I went to jail.
Twice.
Yep, you read that right! Once when I was 19 and again when I was 22.
And that’s just the start of my failures to date.

The first company I founded was A Tailored Suit, which specialized in quality custom clothing. Not only did I fail to succeed, I also took A Tailored Suit into bankruptcy.
And before that, I got fired 3 months into my first job out of Business School.
And before that, I started out with a Naval Aviator Contract in the Marine Core. I got two years into flight school and I failed.
If I look back, I’ve failed.
Again, and again. And again.
But… I didn’t stop. I thought:
I will persist until I succeed.
I’m not telling you this for sympathy or to give you a cheap laugh (though feel free to laugh if it makes you feel better!). I’m telling you this because you need to understand that failure does not define you.
Failure is inevitable. To succeed in life, you have to fail. Failing allows you to learn from your mistakes. It’s what we do when we fall down that’s important; it’s how we pick ourselves back up.
That’s what defines a man.
Your failure does not define you. Your determination does.
Me, Myself And My Failures
So back to the subject of this article. (I know that’s what got your interest in the first place!).
When I was younger, I was partying too hard. I was running from the Police, climbing buildings and generally doing stupid things.
But after getting thrown in jail overnight for the second time, I knew I had to take action. I realized I may have a drinking problem and so I cut out drinking, period.
Some people love to drink regularly, some people enjoy a few drinks with friends now and again. I’m not going to judge anyone but I knew I had to stop and I’m very glad I did.
This doesn’t mean I don’t have enjoy myself any more. I still hang out with friends, it just means I don’t need alcohol to enjoy myself. It does mean I no longer climb buildings but I discovered early on that it wasn’t a career I could succeed in.

With alcohol out of the question, I went back to school and I enrolled in Business School at the University of Texas at Austin. I didn’t drink through this time (…honestly!). Instead I studied and I applied myself and graduated with a perfect GPA.
After A Tailored Suit, I created Real Men Real Style, the million dollar company you see today. It’s amazing what you can achieve after you pick yourself up after failure.
But I wouldn’t have been able to do any of this without my friends, peers and family.
You are the average of the company you keep.

How To Succeed – In Summary
The phrase, ‘Improvise, Adapt, Overcome’ is said to be the unofficial Marines slogan. It embodies the Marines Corps Core Values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment and it can be applied to any situation you find yourself in.
Improvise, Adapt, Overcome.
So back to my story of woe… what happened when I didn’t succeed in flight school? I improvised, I adapted and I overcame; I saw an opportunity and enrolled in the Infantry – 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines.
I had great mentors and I was surrounded by people who cared about me. This environment transformed me into a better leader and into the man you see before you today.
And the rest is history!
My readers and I have one thing in common. We’re looking to be the best men we can be. And this can be a lonely path. It can be but it doesn’t have to be.
