The worst fashion trends? Well, I admit – it's not that they're flat-out bad.
The fact is whether you love or hate them, trends matter. Trends affect the clothing that makes it out to the stores in your area.
The problem is this: certain trends aren't suitable for most settings and situations. People are swayed to buy them because of the hype, not because they actually know where and when they'd wear these clothes.
So as 2019 begins, let me identify 13 fashion trends that might be difficult for you to pull off…both now and in the coming years.
This post was brought to you by Vincero. If you want a stylish & affordable men's watch that will step up your style, Vincero offers bold timepieces & sleek designs for a fraction of the price of designer names.
What I love most about Vincero is their use of color in their watch faces and straps (choose from leather, metal or mesh straps). 1. Avoid: Going Bare-Chested With A Suit Jacket
From a functionality perspective, I think the majority of men should stay away from this trend. Why? Think of the number of times you'll need to have it washed and cleaned after every long use.

Gentlemen: this isn't a good look.
Wearing your suit jacket bare-chested isn't a hygienic choice. That's why we have shirts and undershirts – they protect our more expensive, delicate clothing from getting damaged. And ultimately, only the most confident men in the appropriate settings can really pull it off.
2. Avoid: Showing Your Nipples

Please avoid showing your nipples in public. No one wants to see them.
Is this about shirts with holes exposing your nipples? Nope. But I'm talking about transparent clothing which I consider just as tacky. Think about it – in most situations, it's not that classy or tasteful to wear anything which shows off the nipple (except when you're at the beach).
Guys – no one wants to see your nipples. Period.
3. Avoid: Fashion Colors
Certain colors are likely to go on sale this year, as manufacturers seem to have fallen in love with them. But as men who prioritize long-term fashion, you should be careful about adding them to your wardrobe. These colors are namely neon, dusty orange, racing red, freesia (saturated yellow that's basically like gold) and cobalt (a deep blue).
Neon fabrics particularly reflect light well, which means they'd be great for a belt or vest when you're attending costume parties. I've seen that freesia works nicely for a classic watch cap during the winter. You might also try getting a cobalt jacket since it'll work in a darker shade of blue.
Trending colors like as neon, dusty orange, racing red and cobalt will not stand the test of time.
But generally speaking? All those colors mentioned should be avoided when it comes to mainstay clothing items. They're at the peak of their popularity right now, but such trends won't stand the test of time.

What's one way to make use of trending colors? Have them on your accessories, like a deep blue watch face and strap. Check out this stylish Bellwether Blue + Silver watch from Vincero.
4. The Oversized Double Breasted Jacket
Don't get me wrong. I love double-breasted jackets when they complement your body type.
They let you stand out from the crowd. They're also a great addition to your closet if you already have around four or five suit jackets.
The double breasted jacket should sit perfectly on your shoulders. It needs to fit your body type and enhance it.
The problem is when a jacket is oversized (or overly large in the shoulder area) it looks obviously so. We're no longer in the '80s when baggy pants and big hair were in vogue.
So if you aren't sure what the right size for a double-breasted jacket is, start off with a single-breasted jacket. Get used to it first. It'll help you identify and get used to your size.
5. Avoid: The Neck Wallet
Wearing a neck wallet worked for me over 20 years ago.
Those were the days when I'd ride my motorcycle on and off base. The neck wallet allowed me to keep my ID and badge in a convenient place so I could easily pull them out for inspection. The downside was I didn't find neck wallets fashionable back then. And I don't feel they're ever coming close to being stylish.
6. Avoid: Oversized Jeans & Slashed Jeans
Yes. I'm sure most of us would love to wear those clothes from our high school years and relive the memories. But do remember there's a reason why slashed jeans and oversized jeans are known as “high school” clothing items. They don't do justice to the look of a grown man.
7. Avoid: Dad Socks
Everything has its time and place, gents. And that applies to certain clothing pieces like dad socks – or white socks that go past the ankles.
For suits and office attire, only wear dark socks that match either your shoes or trousers.
These socks aren't a problem when you wear them for the gym or during your morning jog. But for some reason, they're becoming a trend for other kinds of outfits. So I highly recommend you abide by this rule: never mix dad socks with suits and office wear. Respect the classics. Only wear dark socks that match your dress shoes or trousers.
8. Avoid: The Shorts & Turtleneck Combo
Functionally, there's no sense in pairing up these two. Why? The fact is that one is for cold weather, the other for warm weather. This combination may have gotten some hype and it may have appeared on recent fashion shows. But I just don't see this trend lasting very long.
9. Avoid: Tie-Dye
You might genuinely like tie-dye shirts. Even I used to wear one back in the '90s. But let's not forget that these were popularized in the 1970s by those following the band Grateful Dead, the same people who were known to experiment with drugs.
If you wear a tie-dye shirt these days, the reality is you can still get that type of association. But don't be discouraged from ever trying it out. You can wear it to the beach or a weekend barbecue with neighbors. Who knows? Maybe you'll receive some sincere compliments.
10. Avoid: Cowboy Boots
We Americans know about Western/cowboy boots and their place in history. And those from states like Texas and Oklahoma know just how great they are for country dances and parties. But do they work for all events and settings, formal and informal? No.
Don't let the trendiness of cowboy boots fool you, especially those that come in a pink bubblegum color. Cowboy boots are an extreme style. They're also quite expensive! You should only invest in them if you live in an area where these boots are commonly worn for various occasions.
11. Avoid: Short Shorts / High Cut Shorts
It's important to note that for typical men's shorts, the inseam is an average of 8-9 inches long. So I'm curious about why shorts with a shorter inseam have now become a trend. Could it be the appeal of exhibiting toned or muscular thighs? Possibly. But I just don't agree with this trend, even if these short shorts come from the more fashionable men's brands.
12. Avoid: Overalls
Overalls are super functional if you're trying to hide the stuff you'd want to hide (like a beer gut for instance).
So if you're a bigger guy working as a plumber or electrician, or showing up at a football game with your buddies, then overalls can nullify that large stomach.
But for the vast majority of men who are on the small or thin side, play it safe and avoid them altogether. Overalls aren't kind to smaller builds.
13. Avoid: Fire Department Jackets
Finally, we have fire department jackets which – as much respect as I have for the firefighter profession – I just don't see as true men's fashion. I suspect that these jackets are popping up in stores partly because of their flashy neon color.
However, they're not a style for the long term. My advice is to simply avoid them unless you actually work in a fire department.
In the end, gentlemen, I'm all about style that lasts long periods of time. I encourage you to focus on classic, timeless pieces, which is why I also promote building an interchangeable wardrobe.
But at the same time, we can't avoid hearing about trends and items on sale. The trickle-down effect is you'll find pieces that look good at great prices…but end up becoming clutter in your closet. So as you start a new year, don't go swinging for the fences and trying whatever is “hot” at the moment. Prioritize style, not fashion.
