So I've had people ask me: “What is my face shape?”

Have you been wondering the same thing? Yes? Good!

Why? Well, you might've heard me in the past saying how men should wear the right sunglasses for their face…find the right hairstyle for their face…what kind of facial hair matches their face.

All in all – your face shape is an important piece of information. If you want to be stylish, it matters to know what yours is.

There's a lot of info on face shape out there but none of it's clear.

I always make it easy for you – that's why I've created this amazing infographic.

How hard is it to figure out what the shape of your face is? With this method – it's surprisingly easy.

All you need for this simple trick are (1) your smartphone and (2) a quarter or 25-cent coin. The goal behind this technique is to “isolate” the key features of your face – the eyes, eyebrows, nose, and mouth – from the background areas above and below with the help of the coin.

By having the coin cover up those features, it becomes much clearer how pointed your jawline is, and how much space your forehead takes up compared with your jaw, both of which indicate specific traits related to a particular face shape.

Follow these step-by-step instructions along with the infographic below.

Step 1:

The first is actually pretty simple: take a selfie! You want to hold your smartphone at eye-level and look directly at the camera. As much as possible, make sure your head is kept straight because the whole point here is to correctly identify the shape of your face.

Step 2:

Next, load the photo on your smartphone. Use the “edit” feature of the photo app to draw a single horizontal line, which will run from the middle of your left ear to that of your right ear. Ideally, the line ends up falling below your eyes and above your nostrils.

Step 3:

Now it's time to place the phone on a table or a flat surface.

Step 4:

Get yourself a quarter or a 25-cent coin. Lay it flat on the center of the picture of your face.

Step 5:

Based on the coin you've placed, you'll need to shrink or enlarge the photo so that the edges of the coin end up touching your ears. Ensure that the coin is sitting over the horizontal line you created. The line should be cutting right across its center.

Step 6:

Referring to your face that's covered by the coin, you should now focus on the exposed areas above and below the coin – your forehead and your chin. The size and shape of those regions will pinpoint what your face shape really is.

Step 7:

Compare what you see on the photo to the silhouettes above in order to determine your face shape.

Here are the key characteristics of each face shape that you'll want to bear in mind:

Square Face

The forehead line and jawline are of similar lengths. There are several angular sections around the face in general.

Triangle Face

It shares similar traits to the square face. The main difference is that the jaw area is noticeably larger and wider than the forehead (hence being called “triangle”).

Oval Face

The top and the bottom exposed regions of the face are fairly equal in size. The jawline here is rather pointed.

Rectangle/Oblong Face

It's almost identical to the oval face except that the jaw area is significantly bigger and wider than the forehead.

Round Face

What separates the round face from the oval and rectangle face is that overall, the entire face is almost like a perfect circle. The vertical centerline of the face (which cuts across the nose) and the horizontal line are of similar lengths. The jaw also has a distinct half-moon shape.

Diamond Face

It's very similar to the round face but the jaw, in this case, is rather pointed or chiseled. The bottom region definitely isn't as large as that of the other face shapes.

Heart-Shaped Face

It's a close cousin of the oval face. The difference, however, is that the forehead area appears wider than the jaw area (hence the term “heart”).

That's it, gentlemen. Identifying your face shape is that easy. But again, don't underestimate the value of this piece of information. It's an essential component in your knowledge of your personal style. For example – do you know the best types of beards for your face shape? Do you know if you suit point collars or spread collars?

The shape of your face – as little as you can do to change it – is part of what makes you who you are. So rather than just living with it – embrace it! Click here for my infographic on the best glasses for oval face men, square faced men, and every other face shape.
