You can do this with the help of simple clothing adjustments that will highlight your best parts and create an illusion of proportion and balance to your overall appearance.

Ground Rules For Dressing To Your Body Type

  1. Dress for the body you have right now. Any attempts at anatomical correction through exercise is admirable. However, for the present moment, you need to dress for your current shape.
  2. Your body shape determines what you should wear. Shop for clothes and alter the fit for the perfect fit that flatters your body type. Avoid shopping for the latest trend and looking to copy outfits out of a catalogue.
  3. Seek the norm. A trapezoid body shape is generally considered most attractive. Use clothing to create an illusion of wide shoulders and narrow waistline.

Men with a triangular body type often have a slight gut (the beer belly) and a soft shoulder line. The belly creates a disproportionate body image as the upper part of the torso appears smaller than the lower half.

The triangular body type is characterized by shoulders and chest that are narrower than the hips and waist.

Focus on fixing the imbalance created by the lower half of your body appearing larger than the upper half.

Ill-fitting clothes will emphasize the imbalance, ensure your clothes are tailored to your body. Use layering to your advantage to add weight to your appearance around the shoulders and chest.

  • Jackets: Throw on jackets to create structure on the upper half of your torso. One of the challenges for this body type is correcting the appearance of sloping shoulders. Build up the shoulders with structured blazers and jackets with padding.
  • Shirts: Find a shirt with a medium spread collar that adds bulk to the upper part of your body. Casual button-up shirts with epaulets.
    Add color by wearing a bright colored t-shirt under a jumper or jacket.  Avoid narrow crew neck t-shirts and polo shirts – they decrease the width of your shoulder.
  • Trousers: Avoid wearing tapered trousers and skinny jeans because they widen the central part of the body – the area you are trying not to highlight. Trousers with pleats and extra width around the legs are alos to be avoided, they make the lower body appear bulkier.
  • Shoes: Keep your choice of shoes simple. Fancy footwear and an extra large size distracts attention from the upper part of the body, which is where you want the focus. Opt for delicate dress shoes instead.

The V-shape of a body builder or athlete is characterized by a broad chest and shoulders with narrower hips and waist.

This body type is difficult to tailor to, with the upper body being proportionally bigger than the lower half.

A man with an inverted triangle body shape needs to pay attention to correcting the imbalance between the upper and lower body.

The focus is on making your lower body look bigger.

  • Jacket: Avoid looking top-heavy with an unstructured double-breast jacket. A longer jacket made from softer fabrics will help widen the torso and create a proportion in line with your shoulders. Your body shape naturally emphasizes your shoulders.
    Avoid structured jackets with shoulder padding and wide lapels – they emphasize the widest area of your body, making you look like a cartoon figure.

While not quite ideal, this body type has a more proportionate balance between the upper and lower halves of the body.

The shoulders are as wide as the waist and hips.

Focus on widening the shoulders while narrowing the waist to create the illusion of a trapezoid-shape.

Look for balance in all your outfits.

  • Jackets: Structured blazers with padded shoulders will widen your shoulder line. Your suit jacket should be of a longer length to keep the length of your torso and legs in proportion.
    Find a suit jacket with as many pockets as possible, this creates more horizontal lines on your body and helps to draw the attention away from the straightness of your figure.
    Double-breasted jackets are to be avoided as they emphasize the rectangular shape further.
  • Shirts: Adding layers on tops is the ideal way to bulk up the less-developed upper part of the torso. Wear shirts and jumpers to widen the chest. Shirts with double pockets and jackets with padding add bulk to your upper body.
    Ensure the jumpers are fitted in the waist. Crew-neck tees will also draw the attention to the upper torso.
  • Trousers: Ensure that your trousers are closely fitted around the waist to create the impression of a fuller figure. Avoid wearing block colors on the torso.
    Trousers made from heavier fabrics (jeans), that are loose around the lower area of your legs add some thickness to the lower body.

Oval body types are round in the stomach area, with narrower shoulders and slim legs.

Focus on lengthening the torso, de-emphasizing the mid-section and widening the shoulders to add definition to the rest of the body.

Avoid high contrast outfits.

  • Jackets: A long everyday jacket such as a parka elongates your body and is also wind and waterproof.  Dark colors are preferable, find a jacket that matches your dark denims.
    For formal occasions, avoid jackets with shoulder pads and wear them open to create vertical lines to lengthen your body.
    To dress smart casual, select a sports coat made of soft fabric with some texture and pattern.
  • Shirts: Anything too baggy will make you look bigger and too fitted tops show off your larger stomach area. Find a happy medium by wearing tops that just skim your body without hugging them too tightly.

For a trapezoid shaped body, the shoulders and waist are quite proportionate – there isn’t much you need to avoid or adopt in clothing fits.
