I HATE These Brands – Evil Companies I Refuse To Work With

You may have noticed:RMRS Worst Brands

I don’t slander other businesses.

However…

There are some I never recommend –

Making it pretty clear how I feel about them.

As you guys know, I like keep it positive here at RMRS.

That said…

I have a few grievances that I just can’t leave un-aired – shortcuts to profit that are just plain unethical and take advantage of the customer. As you’re building a stylish life, you’ll want to keep an eye out for any and all of these…

Let me be clear – there’s a difference between annoying companies and evil companies. Let’s talk about the annoying ones first…

  • Facebook – yes, they take my information and sell it. But we all know that if you’re on Facebook they’re going to do that.
  • Walmart – okay, they have bad customer service. Walmart really has no customer service. And we should expect that – because they’re Walmart.
  • Goldman Sachs – everyone sees them as evil because they make lots of money.
  • McDonald’s – another company that annoys me, but I can’t really blame them because they’re in the business of fast food, not healthy food. And they have actually made some progress towards serving healthier food in the past 20 years.

We’re all agreed on these, along with several others. Fine. But let’s not kid ourselves. Our ranting and raving about these companies is often little more than hypocritical lip service. Six big macs get eaten every time someone posts #healthyliving on Instagram. Yes, I just made up that statistic. Call them what you want, but companies like MacDonald’s make no apologies for what they are, nor do they pretend to be something they’re not.

Which brings me to my REAL grievances about certain brands.

More specifically, what actions do some companies take that I would view as malicious or evil?

Read on…

#1 Abuse of Information

Voluntarily giving your information to a social media service like Facebook or entering your email address on a website is one thing. Companies collecting your information without your knowledge and selling it is another.

Equifax and Experian do this – and they sometimes obtain and share WRONG information about you. It’s very difficult to get it changed and affects everything you do, especially here in America. When companies like these make a big mistake, for example a major security breach, we ALL pay the price.

#2 Abuse of Monopolies

True monopolies were made illegal in the 1890s, but there are still plenty of evil companies that fully control a local market – or a large portion of it – allowing them to take way too much advantage of the consumer’s lack of choice.

I’m not even going to talk about AT&T – but I will talk about my local phone service. I like the people at this company – but I have to pay almost $300 a month for what I view as basic internet service. They do this because they’ve got a monopoly. I’m not going to say it’s their fault – but I hate it when I’m stuck in a monopoly system and I feel bent over a barrel.

lying-evil-companies#3 Deception Without Restitution

If a company screws up but they’re willing to make it right – fair enough. A family member of mine is with Wells Fargo and they had a fake account created. Wells Fargo apologized and they decided to stay with Wells Fargo.

But if you deceive someone and don’t try to make it right – they’re going to hold it against you. I had an issue with an insurance company when I first brought my family to this country. We were denied coverage because of some loophole that I was told was not an issue. I felt that I was taken advantage of because I’d paid a premium for 6 months.

I still hold a grudge against that company.

#4 Evil Companies In Denial

Companies aren’t perfect. They’re going to make mistakes. Airlines will occasionally have security go on an airplane and drag someone off.

But when companies DENY those mistakes – I see a lack of good leadership. If you’re going to get paid the lion’s share you have to act like a lion. A lion is respected in a pride because he’s willing to die for the pride.

Yet some CEOs aren’t willing to say, ‘Yes, this is on me. I could blame it on security – I could blame it on the seven layers of hierarchy between me and what happened – but I am the CEO. The buck stops with me.‘ Poor leadership frustrates me because I’m sure there are a lot of great people in these companies.

I’ve flown United and American. I’ve got no issue with the hardworking employees at these airlines. It just frustrates me when I see the top executives passing the buck. It makes me want to choose another airline.

Bonus: Menswear Brands I Hate

I know a lot of you guys would LOVE to read about which menswear brands I hate. Sorry to disappoint you – it’s not going to happen.

Why? I’ve looked at over a thousand brands and been to stores – and yes, I have seen products that I didn’t like or thought were overpriced. But instead of hating on the guys creating these companies – I’d rather give them feedback and try to help them. Most of them are really positive people trying to make a difference in the world.

And yes – there are companies I dislike. Did you know I only work with ONE out of every 50 companies that contact me? I’ve got a ‘no asshole’ rule. I don’t work with companies if I don’t like the CEO or if I don’t think we stand for the same values. But believe it or not – I’ve never run into a menswear company that I thought was actually evil.

So guys – when you’re giving companies a hard time for having bad products or bad customer service – recognize that those are not evil companies. Understand that there’s a human being behind them. If you start your own company one day – you’ll realize that even the guy with the ‘bad’ products is doing his best.

Speaking of which – want to network with entrepreneurs who’ve made it HUGE? Want to meet the men’s lifestyle influencers behind brands I LOVE?  Or just meet men like you who are on a journey to better themselves through style?

Aaron Marino and I run a two-day conference for men called Menfluential. It’s a life-changing event… and it’s mostly sold out for next year because men who’ve been once keep coming back. Click here to see if there are any tickets left for Menfluential 2019.
