tuck in your shirt

Some things in life are irritating, gents.

That sticking lock.

That squeaking garden gate.

That dog barking all night.

What about having to constantly tuck in your shirt throughout the day?

Relatable, yes?

It’s annoying, it looks untidy and it ranks high on any stylish man’s list of pet peeves.

Want a quick fix for it?

How about a few?

Well then you’re in the right place.

Let’s eliminate this problem once and for all.

I’ve compiled 4 methods of tucking in your shirt to ensure you look great all day.

#1. Tuck In Your Shirt – The Basic Tuck

You guessed it. There’s nothing fancy going on here. No hidden secrets.

This method is the simplest and most commonly used. Tuck your shirt into your trousers, keeping it as neat as possible. This method works best with tailored or slim fitted shirt styles that don’t billow above the belt. With bigger or shorter men’s shirts styles, you may have to utilize one of the other tucks.

#2. The Military TuckThe Military Tuck

This tuck works best with shirts that have a lot of excess material. As the name suggests, this method is a military style secret I learned in the Marines.

Tuck in your shirt as you would normally but before doing up your trousers, take a side and grip the excess material between your thumb and forefingers. Pull out as much material as you require, then tuck the excess material in and behind, before folding the shirt back on your body.

You should now have 2 crisp folded pleats which will be kept in place by your belt. Ensure the front of your shirt is flat and wrinkle-free.

This method takes a bit of practice but once you’ve got the hang of it, you won’t look back.

#3. The Underwear Tuck

Use this method when you’re wearing an undershirt. Tuck your undershirt into your underwear, then tuck your outer shirt into your trousers as you would normally. This seemingly minor alteration prevents your undershirt from pulling on  your dress shirt, making a world of difference when it comes to keeping the latter in place.

Warning: whatever you do, do not tuck your outer shirt into your underwear. You will lose all credibility if someone sees your briefs riding up above your trouser waistband!

Dress Shirt Stays#4. Shirt Stays

Shirt stays are the last word in keeping your shirt tucked and in place. They work with all shirts, including shorter ones that threaten to come undone every time you sit down.

Shirt stays look like suspenders. They are actually elasticated garters with clips at each end. These clips connect to the bottom of your shirt and the top of your socks.

Shirt stays may take a bit of getting used to but this is the only sure-fire way to guarantee your shirt is pulled tight and your socks stay up all day.

They’re quite easy to put on but doing so takes a bit of practice. You’ll find tutorials all over the internet on how to do so. Our favorite shirt stay brand has an excellent instructional video here.

With all of these tucks, take care to ensure the front of your shirt is smooth and flat. Also remember to ensure your ‘gig line’ is straight. The ‘gig line’ is an imaginary vertical line that runs from your chin to your crotch. Your shirt buttons should align vertically with your fly, and your belt buckle should be neatly centered. This gives you a clean and symmetrical look and shows people you take pride in your appearance.

There you have it, gents. 4 surefire ways to keep your shirt tucked. Phew! Your mind can be calm again. At least until you come back home to that sticking lock…
