jeans rolling methodsYou saved your pennies,

and now…

you’re ready to show off your new boots.

You put them on –

and your jeans hide all but the toes.

Kind of a bummer, right? Fortunately, there’s a solution that also gives you a rugged and masculine look: rolling your jeans.

You’ll want to use a step-by-step approach to make sure it looks right. Most of these methods require 2-6″ of extra fabric to keep them from looking too short.

Read on to learn how to roll jeans in 3 different ways, plus how to cuff and stack jeans. You’ll also find out what each method says about you, and which styles of jeans work best with each one.

how to roll jeansMethod #1 – Stacking

Stacking is the youngest, most fashion-forward of the five methods. It’s best left to men who are a) in their 20s, and b) skinny enough to pull off the types of jeans required.

There is no rolling needed for this method. Just let the extra fabric pool at your ankles.

Looks Best With: skinny or very slim fit jeans.

Method #2 – Deep Cuff

This is an old-school fold that creates a very rugged ‘working man’ look. However, because it’s so casual, this is another one best left to the young – it can look sloppy on older guys.

This fold is very easy to do. Simply roll the cuff up 4-6″. Stick to 4″ if you are shorter. Go for 6″ if you are taller.

Looks Best With: slim or classic fit jeans.

Method #3 – 2 Inch Roll

If you’re a shorter guy you might have been told not to roll your jeans because it makes you look shorter. Not true – you just need to know how to roll jeans in a subtle way.

This method is perfect for men of any height who want a more subtle look. Start by rolling the cuff up 2.5″. Finish by tucking in the hem for a clean look.

Looks Best With: skinny or slim fit jeans.

Method #4 – Pinroll

If you’ve seen my article on how to tuck in a shirtthis method is the military shirt tuck for jeans. It’s neither old-fashioned nor too trendy.

  1. Put on your uncuffed jeans and stand up straight.
  2. Pinch and fold the fabric at the bottom of the inner seam.
  3. Hold the fold in place. Roll up the jeans to form a 1″ cuff.
  4. Pro tip: Use a rubber band to keep the roll in place.

Looks Best With: skinny or slim fit jeans.

Method #5 – Double Roll

Want to know how to roll jeans as EASILY as possible? This method is simple, quick, and easily stays in place. It’s a retro look – until the 1960s jeans only came in a few lengths, so the double roll was the norm.

Roll up the bottom about 1″. Finish by rolling again, this time going up 1.5″. Make each roll slightly lopsided for a nonchalant look.

Looks Best With: skinny, slim, or classic fit jeans.

Bonus: When NOT To Roll Your Jeans

There are a few times when you should just wear jeans that are the right length:

When you want to look your smartest. If either the occasion or the rest of your outfit is particularly smart (especially if you’re worried it’s TOO smart for jeans) skip the rolling. Go with neat, well-fitted dark denim with no break or a half trouser break like your suit pants.

When you want to dress older. Rolled jeans are a youthful style. If you’re over 40 – or if you’re a young man trying to win respect from an older crowd – you don’t HAVE to avoid them, but they’re not going to give you gravitas.

How about when you want to look thinner? Most rolling methods add bulk to your legs and require slim or skinny jeans that won’t flatter big guys. But there’s one exception – classic fit jeans and a double roll work for all body types.
